What does a coupler lock actually prevent?
It stops the coupling head accepting a tow ball, so an unhitched trailer cannot simply be hitched up and towed away.

How do I make sure it fits?
Match it to the coupling type and ball size - stabiliser couplings in particular are a different shape and often need a lock made for them.
Coupling heads differ by ball size, by construction, and by regional standard.
Stabiliser couplings contain friction pads and have a distinctly different housing profile from a plain coupling.
A lock intended for a plain coupling frequently will not seat on a stabiliser head, or seats loosely enough to be worked off.
Manufacturers publish fitment lists by coupling make and model, and those are more reliable than measuring.
Check it actually locks and cannot be rocked free before relying on it, and check it again on a cold day - fit can change with temperature and with a dirty coupling.

What maintenance does a coupler lock need?
Lubricating the barrel, keeping the coupling clean, and checking it still operates before it is relied on - road salt is the main enemy.
Lock barrels on trailers live outdoors in road spray and salt, and they seize.
A seized lock is as much a problem as a stolen trailer when the trailer is needed and the key will not turn.
Use a lock-specific lubricant rather than general oil or grease, which attracts grit and gums the mechanism.
Grease or dirt on the coupling itself can stop a close-fitting lock seating fully, so it needs wiping before fitting.

How should keys be managed across a fleet?

Hold controlled spares centrally rather than in the vehicles, and record which key series each trailer uses.
Where trailers move between depots, keyed-alike is close to essential or locks simply stop being fitted.

Is a coupler lock enough on its own?
