Why is chlorine such a problem?

Thin-film composite cannot tolerate it.
So a chlorinated supply consumes membranes.
Unless carbon removes it first.
How would I notice that happening?
By rejection getting steadily worse.
Not by anything dramatic.
The system keeps producing water.
Just less pure water, gradually.
Often noticed only by taste.
What else shortens membrane life?
Fouling, scaling and biological growth.
Particles blind the surface.
Hardness scales it.
And growth coats it.
All reduce output and rejection together.
Which symptoms show that?
Rising pressure differential.
And falling production.
Usually together, and gradually.
Log both if the system matters.
A trend says more than a reading.
Does cold water slow it down?
Noticeably, and it is normal.
Cold water is more viscous.
So it passes the membrane more slowly.
A system slower in winter.
May be behaving exactly as rated.
