When do I need a non-silicone release agent?

Whenever the moulded part will be painted, printed, bonded, plated, flocked or welded afterwards. Silicone transferred from the mould prevents coatings and adhesives from wetting the surface, causing craters and adhesion failure that are expensive to detect and often impossible to rectify. Automotive trim, composite parts for bonded assembly and anything going straight to a paint line are the usual cases where a non-silicone product is mandatory.

What are non-silicone release agents made from?

Typically waxes, PTFE and other fluoropolymers, or specially formulated organic chemistries, carried in solvent or water. Each family behaves differently: waxes are economical and easy to apply but have modest temperature ceilings, fluoropolymer products release well and tolerate more heat, and formulated organics are tailored to particular moulding materials. Match the family to the moulding process, the material and the mould temperature rather than treating them as interchangeable.

Do they release as well as silicone products?

Generally not as easily. Silicone sets the benchmark for low release force and number of releases per application, and non-silicone products usually require more careful mould preparation, more even application and more frequent renewal. That is the price of paintability. In practice, well-chosen non-silicone products perform perfectly well in production; they are simply less tolerant of careless application than silicone is.

Does non-silicone automatically mean paintable?

No. Absence of silicone removes the most common cause of coating failure, but paintability depends on the complete system: the release agent, the moulding material, any residue left on the part, the surface preparation and the coating chemistry itself. Some non-silicone residues still interfere with certain coatings. Treat a non-silicone label as a necessary condition rather than a guarantee, and validate the actual combination in use.

How should I verify a product before a production run?

Trial it on real parts made from the production material in the production tool, then take those parts through the actual finishing process rather than a laboratory substitute. Test adhesion using the method the finished part will be judged by, such as a cross-hatch or pull-off test, and include parts from later in the release cycle when the film is depleted. Record the trial so the result can be repeated.

What temperature can they withstand?

It varies widely by family, and is often lower than a comparable silicone product, particularly with wax-based formulations. Fluoropolymer based products tolerate more heat. Check the rating against the actual mould surface temperature in operation, which can be considerably higher than the nominal process setting, and confirm that the product does not char or leave a baked residue at that temperature, since burnt residue is itself a surface defect.

How should they be stored and kept uncontaminated?

Segregated from all silicone products, with separate spray equipment, rags, gloves and where practical separate storage. The whole point of specifying non-silicone is defeated by a shared spray gun or a contaminated cloth, and cross-contamination is invisible until parts fail in the paint shop. Label equipment clearly, keep containers closed, and follow the storage temperature guidance, since water-based products can be damaged by freezing.
