Does a trench box hold the ground up?

No - it protects the people inside it if the ground moves. That is a different job from shoring.

Shoring applies force to the trench walls to prevent collapse.

A box is a protective structure placed in the excavation; the soil outside can move and the box is designed to withstand it.

That means the ground around a box is not necessarily stable, and nothing outside the box is protected.

It also means a box does not prevent surface settlement, which matters near roads and structures.

Where preventing ground movement is the requirement, shoring or sheeting is the correct choice.

Why must people stay inside the box?

Because the box protects only the volume between its panels - step outside and there is no protection at all.

Stepping out to make a joint, take a measurement or fetch a tool is the usual sequence.

It happens for reasonable-sounding short-term reasons, which is precisely why it keeps happening.

The trench walls beyond the box may have had no support at any point.

Working outside a box in an unsupported trench is one of the most common fatal excavation scenarios.

Method statements should address how work at the box ends is done without leaving protection.

How are boxes installed and moved?

Lowered in by excavator or crane, and dragged forward along the trench as work progresses.

Nobody enters the excavation during installation, which is the main safety advantage.

Dragging forward means one box protects an entire service run rather than being installed at each position.

That is where the economics come from on long pipe-laying jobs.

Dragging is done with the excavator and requires the trench profile ahead to be suitable.

Boxes are stackable for deeper excavations, with the stacking arrangement part of the rated design.

What determines whether a box is suitable?

Its rated depth and rated soil loading, together with the surcharge present.

A box rated for one depth in one soil type is not automatically suitable deeper or in different ground.

Manufacturers publish rating tables, and those are the basis for selection.

Spoil, plant and adjacent structures all add surcharge that the rating must cover.

Groundwater changes soil behaviour and is a separate consideration.

Selection is a competent-person decision supported by ground information rather than a judgement at the trench edge.

What are the handling hazards?

Weight, awkwardness and lifting over an open excavation - handling is a hazard in its own right.

Boxes are heavy and are lifted by excavator or crane, so lifting plans and certified lifting points apply.

Exclusion zones around the lift are necessary because a dropped panel into an open trench is catastrophic.

Struts and pins can be dislodged during handling if the assembly is not secured.

Transport and storage damage is common and is not always visible.

Slinging arrangements are specified by the manufacturer rather than improvised.

How is a damaged box identified?

By examination against the manufacturer's criteria - and damage that reduces capacity is not always obvious.

Bent or dented panels, distorted struts, worn pin holes and weld cracking all reduce rated capacity.

Impact from an excavator bucket is the usual cause and is often not reported.

Examination records travel with the equipment and should be current.

Hire suppliers provide certification, and checking it is part of accepting the equipment.

A box with unrecorded damage should not be used until it has been assessed.

When is a box the wrong choice?

Where ground movement itself must be prevented, in very narrow trenches, and where excavator access is limited.

Alongside an existing structure, road or service, surface settlement is the concern and a box does not prevent it.

Very narrow service trenches may not accommodate a box at all.

Restricted sites without room for an excavator to place and drag a box rule it out.

Short single-position excavations gain less from a box than from hydraulic shores.

Ground that flows, such as saturated sand, may need driven sheeting installed before excavation.
